      <image:title>PH.D. STUDENTS - Ariadna Rojas Corzo</image:title>
<image:caption>Ariadna (Ari) is a PhD student who joined the lab in August of 2020. Her research is aimed at the conservation ecology of the whitespotted eagle ray (Aetobatus narinari) in North America, with a focus in Florida waters. Since the whitespotted eagle ray (SER) is a globally endangered species with a decreasing population trend, the identification of nursery areas and anthropogenic effects on the species is critical. Ari graduated from the University of Havana with her Bachelors of Science in Biology and gained valuable experience as a research assistant in the Project for the Conservation of Sharks and Rays in Cuba and also as a research volunteer for the Spotted Eagle Ray Research and Conservation Program at Mote Marine Lab.</image:caption>

      <image:title>PH.D. STUDENTS - Clark Morgan</image:title>
<image:caption>Clark is a PhD student who joined the lab in June 2021. His research focuses on the movement ecology and fishery implications of the Atlantic Goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara) via acoustic telemetry and remote sensing technologies. By studying specific movement patterns, as well as interactions with multiple anthropogenic agents (i.e. fisheries, climate change, etc.), information critical to proper management will be obtained as Goliath grouper are again an emerging conservation concern. Clark obtained his BS from Florida State University and MS from University of North Florida where he used fishery-independent surveys and stable isotope analysis to investigate coastal elasmobranch community dynamics and resource use.</image:caption>

      <image:title>PH.D. STUDENTS - Dr. Steven Lombardo</image:title>
<image:caption>email: slombardo2018@fau.edu Steven is a PhD student who joined the lab in June 2018. His research is focused on identifying and characterizing habitat used by juvenile bonefish (Albula vulpes) in the Florida Keys. Identifying habitat that stewards recruitment of this recreationally important species is vital to implementing protections to aid in the restoration of the Florida Keys bonefish population. Prior to joining the Ajemian Lab, Steven completed his B.S. in Biology at the University of Akron in Akron, OH, and a M.S. in Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology at NC State University’s Center for Marine Sciences and Technology in Morehead City, NC. Under the advisement of Dr. Jeffrey Buckel, he worked closely with the NC Division of Marine Fisheries to assess spawning habitat use and characterize the spawning migration phenology of anadromous alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) and blueback herring (Alosa aestivalis), collectively known as river herring. He has also regularly been involved with the National Marine Fisheries Service’s Southeast Fisheries Independent Survey (SEFIS), assisted in mark-recapture studies to estimate release mortality of reef and pelagic fish species, and has worked professionally as a creel clerk for Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and as a radiological chemist.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Post-docs - Dr. Liberty Boyd</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Boyd earned a BS from Florida Atlantic University’s Wilkes Honors College and earned a PhD in Biology from Florida International University, advised by Dr. Mike Heithaus. Dr. Boyd worked as the Sea Turtle Program Lead Research Scientist at the Cape Eleuthera Institute in The Bahamas from 2020-2022. As of September 2024, Dr. Boyd has joined the FEC lab as an FAU Jumpstart Postdoctoral Fellow. Her current research project investigates the foraging ecology of loggerhead sea turtles in Florida and measures the bioaccumulation of harmful algal bloom (HAB) toxins in loggerheads through dietary pathways. She also works closely with The National Save The Sea Turtle Foundation and Florida Hawksbill Project by assisting with research on the abundance and distribution of critically endangered hawksbill sea turtles in South Florida. Broadly Dr. Boyd is interested in foraging and movement ecology of marine megafauna in coastal habitats and is passionate about science communication and youth engagement in ocean conservation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Post-docs - Dr. Katie Flowers</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Kathryn (Katie) Flowers earned her Ph.D. in Biology at Florida International University and was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Mote Marine Laboratory before joining the lab as a Researcher in August 2024. Dr. Flowers’ work sought to understand what factors influence coastal stingray abundance in Belize. She worked with fisherfolk, incentivizing them to participate in research to reduce the number of days they fish for sharks. Dr. Flowers is a passionate advocate for science and community backed conservation. Her collaborative efforts led to the first smalltooth sawfish rescue during the Florida Keys abnormal fish behavior event and legislative changes in Belize, including extended marine protected area boundaries for reef sharks and full protection of all ray species. She has expertise in anthropology, behavioral ecology, conservation biology, fisheries management, and marine policy. <image:title>Post-docs - Dr. Lauran Brewster</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Brewster was with the FEC lab from 2019 to 2022. She was instrumental in developing biologging tags for multiple taxa (goliath grouper, young bull sharks, and whitespotted eagle rays) and the associated analyses involving various sensors (motion, sound, video, etc.). Lauran also helped obtain funding for multiple projects involving shark depredation in recreational fisheries.
